Description
You're bidding on a cool, vintage map of the Monument Valley region in the Arizona & Utah border region of the Southwestern U.S. Monument Valley is a Tribal Park within the boundaries of the Navajo Nation, and probably one of the most photographed and recognizable places on earth. The map is circa 1960s - It mentions the dedication of the Park and Observatory building in May, 1960, but the highway and route numbering predates the renumbering of the highways in 1970.The piece is two sided - 12" X 17" dimensions. The "better side" is a combined topographic and road map of the whole Monument Valley region, with fun illustrations of the views from different locations on the map, as well as some landmark illustrations. The back side has panelized information about the history, climate and culture of the region - it leads me to believe that this was probably printed to be a handout type publication, but this copy was never creased/folded. Not sure if it's a state, or tribal, or National Park Service purblication, or just a regional souvenir - the only identifier on the piece is a "R.M.W." copyright mark within the map illustrations. Not sure if that's a monogram for the mapmaker or an organization.
Note that it looks kind of matting burned, but both sides are toned, with a bright border so I think it may intentionally be sepia toned. Right margin on the map side has a discolored streak, maybe from old framer's tape - otherwise, the piece is quite clean and appealing.
Please review photos carefully to make your own determination of condition and appeal, and don't hesitate to ask any questions prior to bidding - thanks for looking!
