The original peg design of the master violin makers like, Stradivarius, Ganari, Amati and others, is the 'wedge principle', and this is still the norm today. The peg box is fitted to an angle with a special, tapered reamer. The pegs are then shaped with a special 'peg shaver' that works much like a pencil sharpener. In a perfect world pegs won't slip, but in changing weather the pegs can slip and cause your playing to go very out of tune. A few drops will stop this and keep you in tune.
Just one drop on either side of the peg and no more slipping. No need to remove the pegs.
