Vintage Soviet Cap mabut
A sand-colored summer cap designed to be worn together with the uniform of the GRU units. Light, but strong enough fabric (an analogue of the "rip-stop" material with a special weaving structure), smooth seams, a strong visor, turn-down ears with a collar covering the back of the head.
This cap is resistant to frequent washing, does not absorb dirt, does not fade, holds its shape perfectly and is suitable for constant wearing, effectively protecting the surface of the head from prolonged exposure to sunlight.
The name "mabuta" comes from the name of one of the African dictators. Through Soviet military advisers, the term quickly migrated to the army, where it received its new meaning. Mabuta – that is, black, . Almost simultaneously, the term began to be used in the special forces of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the USSR and the construction troops. The first" mabuts " were called newcomers, and the second word had much more circulation and was used almost to the entire personnel. Since the newcomers to the GRU wore a set uniform pattern and a special kind of cap, it also began to be called by this word. Now there is no GRU of the USSR, but the designation "mabuta" for the elements of the uniform and headdress remains.
The cap of the mabut of the special forces of the GRU of the USSR is a kind of hybrid of an ordinary combined-arms cap with "ears" on a button, which could be strengthened at the top, or lowered, keeping part of the throat and chin warm. The ears also had another meaning: since a significant part of the special forces operations took place in desert or mountainous territories, this method of fastening protected from stuffing dust into the collar. The headdress was made in the traditional color scheme for the Soviet troops. This type of caps was used for a very long time, until it was replaced by more modern and convenient models.
