    Description

City of New-York. dated183515.5 x 12 in (39.37 x 30.48 cm) 1 : 17000 A beautiful example of the 1835 Tanner's Map of New York City. The map covers Manhattan from the Battery to 37th Street (Murray Hill) and from the Hudson River to the East River. It also includes parts of adjacent Brooklyn (Brooklyn Heights), the Brooklyn Navy Yard, and Williamsburg (Brooklyn had not yet been consolidated). The map is color coded according to city ward and names all streets, slips, and parks. Important buildings, including markets, public buildings, squares, hotels, and churches are identify via a numerical system that references tables to the left and right of the map.
The H. S. Tanner copyright on this map (bottom right) features a date of 1835, but Tanner's Universal Atlas was not published until one year later, in 1836.
This map is the progenitor of the Mitchell, Thomas Cowperthwait, and Desilver, New York City atlas maps series with a publishing run of nearly 50 years.
