A New and Accurate Map of New South Wales, with Norfolk and Lord Howe's Islands Port Jackson &c from Actual Surveys.
(Oceania / Australia / New Holland / Pacific ocean).
Issued c.1814, likely Philadelphia for M. Carey. Engraved by E. Gridley.
Rare early 19th century American engraved map relating to Australia, with early/ [possibly original] hand color. Among the earliest maps engraved in North America to focus on and depict New Holland in the 19th century.
Three insets, including largest of Norfolk island which names a "New Settlement" and shows a primitive early street grid for it. Some offshore navigational features noted for sailing vessels, inset of Port Jackson and Botany Bay lower right with an early Sydney Cove.
Uniform paper age toning, various light to moderate old damp staining, overall appearance is one of genuine age and not offensive. Not a perfect clean example, but also entirely acceptable given the scarcity.
An early folio sheet map depicting Australia, there being no maps produced in America prior to 1800 which focus on the continent (see Wheat & Brun, pp. 184-5.)
    Sheet measures c. 16 3/4" x 11 1/2".
    Printed area measures c. 10 5/8" x 9".
    Tooley's Dictionary of Mapmakers, v. 2.
    Stauffer,
American Engravers Upon Copper and Steel,
v.1., p.111 (noting he worked in Phila after 1805, last known plate by him being 1818). Also see v. 2, pp. 199-201 (noting 10 engravings but no maps).
    Fielding,
    American Engravers
    ,
    supplement
, pp. 120-1 (noting eight engravings by Gridley, but no maps / nor this item).
Rumsey Collection online, showing this map with almost the same inset colored paper tab stub along left edge.
    Wheat & Brun,
Maps Published in America Before 1800
, no maps recorded which depict solely the continent or any portion of it. this Gridley map clearly a direct and unashamed cartographic plagarism of Wilkinson's 1794 version.
