The first time we speak about California as an island was in a fiction book written by Rodriguez de Montalvo in 1510. Baja California was discovered in 1533 by Fortan Ximenez, who has been sent by Hernan Cortez. When Cortez himself travelled to Baja, he must have had the Montalvo's novel in his mind, because he proclamed the 'island of California' to the king of Spain. Later, in the 16th and 17th century, several explorers like Francisco de Ulloa, Hernando de Alarcon, etc.. prooved in fact that California was in fact a peninsula. But the predominence of the Spanish in the world made that this idea has endured for many years.
