1855 Very Decorative Tallis Map - West Canada
The John Tallis company were prominent publishers in the mid-nineteenth century but are best known for producing "the last great decorative world atlas" when they issued 'The Illustrated Atlas' in 1851. All of the maps had several lovely vignette scenes showing important places and activities. The style was so popular that later editions of the atlas included city plans in a similar vein as well as being used in Wright's 'Universal Pronouncing Dictionary' around 1855.
This steel engraving shows West Canada, which was to become the province of Ontario, more than fifteen years before confederation. Settlement has yet to spread northwards on to the Canadian shield. There are four lovely vignettes, 'Kingston',  'Falls of Niagara', an Indian scene and a beaveras well as a great seal. The ornate border also has additional decoration.
The map measures 9.5" by 13.5", has original outline colour and later wash hand colouring to the vignettes, and is in good condition with a centrefold (as issued).
The map is guaranteed to be over 160 years old.
