    Description

Demantoid garnet is the rarest and most valuable of the garnets. The name "demantoid" means "diamond-like luster" and demantoid garnet is one of the few gemstones with a luster and brilliance like diamond. Found in bottle green to emerald green to yellowish green, demantoid garnet is difficult to find and is typically only in smaller sizes.
Demantoid garnets were first discovered in the Ural Mountains of Russia in 1868.  Immediately this gem became everyone's favorite gem and was placed into the finest jewelry from Russia to Paris and even to New York.  Even Carl Faberge, Russia's star jeweler, proclaimed the Demantoid garnet to be his favorite gem at the time.  Quickly the mine in the Ural Mountains became depleted of fine specimens and thus the star of garnets was nowhere to be found.
This specimen is a small square emerald cut Demantoid garnet, with an emerald-green color. It was acquired from a dealer who listed its country of origin as Russia. Since the stone is small, the typical “horsetails” are difficult to discern, but several of the photos reveal them, especially when viewing from the underside of the stone. "Country of Origin" testing is extremely expensive and did not make sense for a stone of this size. The stone weighs 0.62 carats and measures approximately 5 x 4 x 2.5 mm. The photos were taken with a Zeiss “Macro” lens, providing 20x+ magnification under diffuse LED light. An extended 30-day money-back guarantee is provided to allow for independent appraisal. The final photo in the series shows the underside of the stone. This item is insured against loss/damage during transit at seller's expense.
